#23 Lucian Freud

Lucian Freud is known as one of the most notable painters of our age, and sadly passed away last year. I discovered Freud during secondary school, and loved his use of colour, which was similar to that of Jenny Saville's. Paintings of people were central to his work and this major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, spanning over seventy years, is the first to focus on his portraiture.

The exhibition starts 9th Feb to 27th May 2012 - National Portrait Gallery, London

Freud had many friendships within the celebrity world, such as Kate Moss, where they shared stories about Francis Bacon and Cecil Beaton. They met in 2001, and Moss started to sit for Freud straight away. Moss had always wanted to meet Freud, and was and still is good friends with his daughter Bella.

Bella Freud launched her fashion career in 1990, and was encouraged by Freud. Bella asked her father to write her name, so she could use it as her logo, and to her surprise he spent 20 minutes on a drawing of his whippet Pluto's head with its tongue hanging out. This was to be her new logo, which still stands today. Bella said 'It was the most perfect and charismatic piece of work, and represented exactly what I like about any style: upmarket irreverence'.
